Regular Season Round 5: Benfica - Sporting 85-79

Date: November 2, 2019
The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of Sporting (4-1) in Lisbon on Saturday night. Visitors were defeated by fourth ranked Benfica (4-1) 85-79. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Sporting. Benfica looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists comparing to just 12 passes made by Sporting's players. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Benfica made 8 blocks. American-Hungarian forward Damian Hollis (203-88, college: GWU) stepped up and scored 16 points for the winners and American forward Micah Downs (203-86, college: Gonzaga) chipped in 11 points and 6 rebounds. Four Benfica players scored in double figures. Nigerian forward Abdul-Malik Abu (203-95, college: NC State) responded with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 17 rebounds and American forward James Ellisor (195-90, college: Bemidji St.) scored 23 points. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Benfica have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Sporting and Oliveirense. Benfica is looking forward to face Illiabum (#7) in Ilhavo in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Sporting will play at home against Lusitania (#11) and is hoping to win this game.
