Regular Season Round 17: Hagen Phoenix - Bayer Giants 99-81

An interesting game took place in Hagen where higher ranked Bayer Giants (9-7) were upset on the court of eleventh ranked Phoenix Hagen (7-9) 99-81 on Saturday. Phoenix Hagen made 19-of-25 free shots (76.0 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Phoenix Hagen made 7 blocks. The best player for the winners was American guard Kyle Leufroy (190-96, college: Lehigh) who scored 27 points and 6 assists. His fellow American import guard Jonathan Octeus (193-91, college: Purdue) chipped in a double-double by scoring 13 points, 12 rebounds and 9 assists. Four Phoenix Hagen players scored in double figures. Center Dennis Heinzmann (216-91) produced 11 points and 9 rebounds and American forward Nick Hornsby (201-95, college: Sacramento St.) added 9 points and 6 assists respectively for the guests. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The victory was the fifth consecutive win for Phoenix Hagen. They moved-up to tenth place, which they share with Kirchheim. Newly promoted Bayer Giants dropped to the seventh position with seven games lost. Phoenix Hagen will meet league's leader Chemnitz on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Bayer Giants will play against Walter Tigers (#9) in Tuebingen and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
