Regular Season Round 13: Rilski - Balkan 93-94

The most exciting game of round 13 in the NBL took place in Samokov. This derby game ended with only one-point home defeat of 4th placed Rilski (9-4) to first ranked Balkan (12-1) 94-93 on Saturday evening. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Rilski. Balkan dominated down low during the game scoring 60 of its points in the paint compared to Rilski's 38. Balkan forced 19 Rilski turnovers. 27 personal fouls committed by Rilski helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Montenegrin center Mihailo Sekulovic (205-91) stepped up and scored 17 points for the winners and guard Stanislav Tsonkov (191-91) chipped in 14 points. Five Balkan players scored in double figures. At the losing side American swingman Xavier Johnson (201-93, college: Colorado) responded with 22 points and 9 rebounds (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field) and the other American import point guard Brandon Brown (180-91, college: Loyola Mary) scored 22 points. Rilski's coach Ludmil Hadjisotirov rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Balkan have an impressive series of seven victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 12-1 record, which they share with Levski Lukoil. Rilski at the other side keeps the fourth position with four games lost. Balkan is looking forward to face Academik Plovdiv (#5) at home in the next round. Rilski will play against Cherno More in Varna and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
