There was a small surprise when tenth ranked Barreirense (5-9) crushed 8th ranked Maia Basket (5-9) in Barreiro 107-79 on Sunday. Barreirense made 22-of-26 free shots (84.6 percent) during the game. Barreirense outrebounded Maia Basket 43-31 including a 32-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. American players dominated the game. Forward Khaleal McCormick (198-94, college: Tiffin) notched a double-double by scoring 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead the effort and forward David Shepard (200-94, college: Lindenwood-Bellev.) supported him with 26 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Shepard is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Five Barreirense players scored in double figures. Even 28 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists by forward Kurt James (196-95, college: Valdosta St.) did not help to save the game for Maia Basket. Guard Fred Sims-Jr (193-97, college: Chicago St.) added 20 points and 4 assists for the guests. Maia Basket's coach gave up on the game allowing to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Barreirense moved-up to ninth place, which they share with CAB Madeira and Maia Basket. Barreirense will meet league's second-placed Benfica in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Maia Basket will play against Oliveirense (#4) and hope to secure a win.
