Regular Season Round 20: Terceira - Benfica 69-131

Bottom-ranked Terceira (0-20) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 131-69 loss to second ranked Benfica (18-2) in Angra Heroismo on Saturday evening. But it was rather predictable considering how strong their opponent was. Benfica dominated down low during the game scoring 76 of its points in the paint compared to Terceira's 34. Benfica forced 22 Terceira turnovers and outrebounded them 33-22 including 23 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 29 assists comparing to just 16 passes made by Terceira's players. Worth to mention a great performance of American-Hungarian forward Damian Hollis (204-88, college: GWU) who helped to win the game recording 19 points and 6 rebounds and the former international swingman Jose Silva (194-89) who added 22 points during the contest. Four Benfica players scored in double figures. Benfica's coach Carlos Lisboa felt very confident that he used 10 players saving starting five for next games. American forward Jalen McCallum (203-95, college: LaGrange) responded with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 12 rebounds and his fellow American import guard Andre Yates (188-94, college: Benedictine, KS) scored 24 points and 5 assists (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field). Benfica maintains second position with 18-2 record behind leader Sporting. Loser Terceira still closes the standings. Benfica will meet at home Galitos-Barreiro (#6) in the next round. Terceira will play against Lusitania (#8) in Angra and hopes to get finally their first victory.
