Regular Season Round 22: Gemlik - Merkezefendi 87-116

Very predictable result when third ranked Merkezefendi (15-7) rolled over 13th ranked Gemlik (7-15) in Bursa 116-87 on Saturday. Merkezefendi shot 62.2 percent from the field. They shot the lights out from three sinking 16 long-distance shots on high 64.0 percentage. Merkezefendi looked well-organized offensively handing out 39 assists comparing to just 25 passes made by Gemlik's players. It was a very good performance for the former international Umit Sonkol (206-82) who helped to win the game recording 24 points and 6 rebounds (perfect from downtown making all six shots !!!). Ukrainian Olexandr Mishula (192-92) contributed with 14 points and 6 assists for the winners. American forward Gary Johnson (201-88, college: Texas) replied with 19 points and 5 rebounds and his fellow American import point guard Diante Watkins (174-90, college: Robert Morris) added 11 points and 5 assists in the effort for Gemlik. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Merkezefendi have a solid four-game winning streak. Newly promoted Merkezefendi maintains third position with 15-7 record having just three points less than leader Fethiye. Gemlik at the other side, also newcomer in the league, keeps the thirteenth place with 15 games lost. Merkezefendi will face Akhisar Bld (#6) at home in the next round. Gemlik will play against Bornova Bld (#7) and hope to win that game.
