Regular Season Round 5: Urla - Mersin Univ. 100-51

Bottom-ranked Mersin Univ. (0-5) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 100-51 loss to fifth ranked Urla (3-1) in Izmir on Saturday evening. They dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Mersin Univ.'s 28. Urla forced 19 Mersin Univ. turnovers and outrebounded them 49-27 including a 39-24 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 31 assists comparing to just 3 passes made by Mersin Univ.'s players. American forward Marie Benson (185-97, college: UT Arlington) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 33 points (!!!) and 14 rebounds (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!) for the winners and forward Doga Comba (185-94) chipped in 15 points and 9 rebounds. Urla's coach Hakan Yigit felt very confident using 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The former international Fahriye Bayraktar (185-95) responded with 17 points and 5 rebounds and Avinar Kaya (-98) scored 11 points. Urla maintains fifth place with 3-1 record. Mersin Univ. lost their fifth game in a row. They still close the standings with five games lost. Urla will meet higher ranked Antalya 07 (#3) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Mersin Univ. will play against Duzce Bld (#10) and hopes to get finally their first victory.
