Regular Season Round 8: Steaua B. - Ploiesti CSM 78-77

There was a small surprise when tenth ranked Steaua B. (4-3) edged 8th ranked Ploiesti CSM (4-4) in Bucuresti 78-77 on Monday. Ploiesti CSM was trailing by 1 point at halftime but managed to get 3-point lead after three quarters before a 22-18 charge of Steaua B., which allowed them to win the game. Strangely Ploiesti CSM outrebounded Steaua B. 37-20 including a 13-2 advantage in offensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Steaua B. made 7 blocks. The winners were led by Serbian forward Zarko Djuric (198-89) who scored that evening 28 points and American center Terrell Carter II (208-96, college: Fresno St., agency: Haylett Sports) supported him with 22 points, 7 rebounds and 5 blocks (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field). Even 18 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) by American guard Deion Hammond (193, college: Monmouth) did not help to save the game for Ploiesti CSM. Serbian-North Macedonian point guard Andrej Magdevski (192-96, agency: Mansfield and Associates) added 12 points and 5 rebounds for the guests. Ploiesti CSM's coach Mihai Popa rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Steaua B. moved-up to eighth place. Ploiesti CSM lost third consecutive game. Newly promoted team dropped to the ninth position with four games lost. They share it with Dinamo B.. Steaua B. will meet higher ranked Constanta (#6) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Ploiesti CSM will play against Craiova and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
