Regular Season Round 9: Mersin - Izmit 87-50

Rather expected game when 8th ranked Izmit (4-5) was crushed on the road by sixth ranked Mersin (6-3) 87-50 on Saturday. Mersin dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Izmit's 22. They outrebounded Izmit 45-24 including a 34-20 advantage in defensive rebounds. Mersin looked well-organized offensively handing out 27 assists comparing to just 12 passes made by Izmit's players. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Mersin made 7 blocks. The best player for the winners was British-Nigerian forward Temi Fagbenle (193-92, college: USC) who had a double-double by scoring 17 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field). American point guard Jasmine Thomas (175-89, college: Duke) chipped in 18 points. Five Mersin players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was Canadian guard Nirra Fields (175-93, college: UCLA, agency: LBM Management) who recorded 16 points and guard Idil Turk (175-96, college: UTRGV) added 14 points respectively. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Mersin moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Galatasaray. Loser Izmit keeps the eighth position with five games lost. Mersin will meet league's second-placed Ormanspor in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Izmit will play against Antalya 07 (#9) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
