There was a surprise result when fourteenth ranked MLP Academics Heidelberg (5-10) beat at home higher ranked Hakro Merlins (10-6) 100-90 on Friday. MLP Academics Heidelberg shot 60.7 percent from the field and made 20-of-24 free shots (83.3 percent) during the game. They shot the lights out from three sinking 12 long-distance shots on high 52.2 percentage. American players dominated also this game. The winners were led by power forward Brekkott Chapman (206-96, college: Weber St.) who scored that evening 22 points and 6 rebounds and guard Robert Lowery (188-87, college: Dayton) supported him with 22 points and 5 assists (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). MLP Academics Heidelberg's coach Branislav Ignjatovic allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Even a double-double of 20 points and 10 assists by point guard TJ Shorts (175-97, college: UC Davis) did not help to save the game for Hakro Merlins. Forward Jaren Lewis (198-96, college: ACU) added 11 points and 9 rebounds for lost side. Four MLP Academics Heidelberg and five Hakro Merlins players scored in double figures. MLP Academics Heidelberg moved-up to thirteenth place, which they share with Frankfurt. Loser Hakro Merlins dropped to the seventh position with six games lost. They share it with Ludwigsburg. MLP Academics Heidelberg will meet higher ranked Braunschweig (#12) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Hakro Merlins will play against Brose Bamberg (#11) and hope to secure a win.
