Regular Season Round 17: Karsiyaka - Mersin 49-68

Not a big story in a game in Izmir where 11th ranked Karsiyaka (6-10) was outplayed by third ranked Mersin (14-3) 68-49 on Saturday. Mersin forced 22 Karsiyaka turnovers and outrebounded them 47-34 including 32 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. American Peyton Whitted (190-95, college: Penn St.) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 14 rebounds for the winners and Nihan Tolgay (-92) chipped in 10 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists. Mersin's coach Ibrahim Sagdic used entire bench and allowed the starting five to rest. Guard Ozlem Copuroglu (174-92) responded with 13 points (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) and power forward Betul Erkoyuncu (190-96) scored 12 points and 6 rebounds. The victory was the third consecutive win for Mersin. Newly promoted Mersin maintains third place with 14-3 record having just three points less than leader Emlak. Karsiyaka at the other side keeps the eleventh position with ten games lost. Mersin will meet at home Fenerbahce G. (#9) in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Karsiyaka's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Izmir to the arena Cesme.
