Regular Season Round 13: Maia Basket - Sangalhos 52-53

Sixth-ranked Maia Basket (3-10) gave a tough game to second ranked Sangalhos (11-2) on Saturday. The visitors from Sangalhos managed to secure only one-point victory 53-52. However their fans expected much easier game. American forward Steven Julian (198-96, college: Cornell) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 20 rebounds for the winners and his fellow American import swingman Malik Marquetti (199-96, college: La-Lafayette) chipped in 14 points and 13 rebounds. At the losing side American forward David Bottenberg (203-97, college: SC State) responded with 7 points and 11 rebounds and Joao Lucas (195-96) scored 12 points. Maia Basket's coach Paulo Fidalgo tried various players' combinations and tested in total twelve players in this game, but that didn't help. Sangalhos have an impressive series of six victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Galomar. Maia Basket lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the seventh place with ten games lost. Sangalhos is looking forward to face league's leader Galomar in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Maia Basket will play against Electrico FC (#5) in Ponte de Sor and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
