Third-ranked Sporting (19-7) gave a tough game to first ranked Benfica (23-3) in Lisbon on Saturday. Benfica managed to secure only one-point victory 79-78. However their fans expected easier game. Benfica forced 19 Sporting turnovers. 24 personal fouls committed by Sporting helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Worth to mention a great performance of American guard Aaron Broussard (196-1990, college: Seattle) who helped to win the game recording 20 points and 8 assists and the other American import center Wendell Lewis (208-1989, college: Alabama St.) who added 10 points and 11 rebounds during the contest. Five Benfica players scored in double figures. At the losing side American center Joshua Patton (203-1997, college: Sacramento St.) responded with 19 points and 6 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) and naturalized Angolan Antonio Monteiro (204-1989, agency: Promo Sport ID) scored 14 points and 6 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Benfica have an impressive eight-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 23-3 record. Sporting lost fourth consecutive game. Defending champion keeps the third place with seven games lost. Benfica are looking forward to face league's second-placed FC Porto on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Sporting will play against Oliveirense and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
