No shocking result in a game when top-ranked Benfica (2-0) beat 8th ranked CAB Madeira (1-3) in Lisbon 83-71 on Saturday. Benfica made 16-of-21 free shots (76.2 percent) during the game. Benfica outrebounded CAB Madeira 43-32 including 28 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The winners were led by naturalized Cape Verdean Ivan Almeida (198-1989, college: Stonehill) who scored that evening 13 points and 9 rebounds and German center Maik Zirbes (208-1990, agency: BeoBasket) supported him with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Benfica's coach Norberto Alves used a ten-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. Even 19 points and 6 rebounds by forward Nuno Sa (200-1997) did not help to save the game for CAB Madeira. American AJ Cheeseman (202-1998, college: UMES) added 19 points for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Defending champion moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Sporting. Loser CAB Madeira dropped to the ninth position with three games lost. Benfica will meet Sangalhos (#11) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. CAB Madeira will play against Imortal and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
