There was a surprise result when eleventh ranked MLP Academics Heidelberg (2-2) defeated at home higher ranked EWE Baskets (3-2) 102-94 on Saturday. American point guard Eric Washington (183-1993, college: Miami, OH) stepped up and scored 16 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners and the former international Akeem Vargas (192-1990, college: Iowa Lakes) chipped in 16 points and 7 rebounds (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line). American point guard Dewayne Russell (180-1994, college: GCU) responded with 23 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) and the other American import Trey Drechsel (198-1996, college: GCU) scored 18 points and 7 rebounds. Five MLP Academics Heidelberg and four EWE Baskets players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. MLP Academics Heidelberg moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Goettingen. Loser EWE Baskets dropped to the seventh position with two games lost. MLP Academics Heidelberg will meet league's second-placed Telekom Baskets in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. EWE Baskets will play against Skyliners (#17) in Frankfurt and hope to secure a win.
