Regular Season Round 17: Sporting - Esgueira 89-42
Date: January 7, 2023
Not a big story in a game in Lisbon where 6th ranked Esgueira (7-10) was rolled over by third ranked Sporting (13-4) 89-42 on Saturday. Sporting held Esgueira to an opponent 20.4 percent shooting from the field compared to 55.4 percent accuracy of the winners. They outrebounded Esgueira 48-23 including a 41-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. Sporting looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by Esgueira's players. The best player for the winners was the former international Travante Williams (193-1993, college: Alaska, agency: Inception Sports) who had a double-double by scoring 12 points, 16 rebounds and 9 assists. American center Joshua Patton (203-1997, college: Sacramento St.) chipped in 13 points and 9 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Five Sporting players scored in double figures. The former international point guard Pedro Catarino (184-1990) produced 12 points and 4 assists and American forward Ryan Ogden (193-1996, college: Southwestern) added 8 points and 5 rebounds respectively for the guests. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Sporting maintains third place with 13-4 record having just one point less than leader FC Porto. Newly promoted Esgueira dropped to the seventh position with ten games lost. They share it with Vitoria SC. Sporting will meet at home Ovarense (#4) in the next round. Esgueira will play against Lusitania and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
