There was a minor upset in Istanbul where 6th ranked Galatasaray (7-7) was defeated by ninth ranked Merkezefendi (7-7) 100-83 on Monday. Merkezefendi made 19-of-22 free shots (86.4 percent) during the game. They shot the lights out from three sinking 15 long-distance shots on high 60.0 percentage. Merkezefendi looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. The best player for the winners was Israeli-American guard Max Heidegger (191-1997, college: UCSB) who scored 27 points and 8 assists. Greek swingman Nikolaos Rogkavopoulos (203-2001) chipped in a double-double by scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds. Italian-American forward Angelo Caloiaro (203-1989, college: USF, agency: Pensack Sports) produced 20 points and 7 rebounds and the former international swingman Goksenin Koksal (196-1991) added 18 points and 6 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Five Merkezefendi and four Galatasaray players scored in double figures. Galatasaray's coach Andreas Pistiolis let to play ten players seeing no chance for a win. Merkezefendi moved-up to sixth place, which they share with 3 other teams including defeated Galatasaray. Merkezefendi will meet higher ranked Efes (#5) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Galatasaray will play against Manisa and hope to secure a win.
