Regular Season Round 17: Miercurea Ciuc - Cluj Napoca 61-94
Date: January 21, 2023
There was no surprise when 8th ranked Miercurea Ciuc (2-13) was crushed at home by second ranked Cluj Napoca (14-1) 94-61 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Cluj Napoca. Miercurea Ciuc managed to win third quarter 18-16. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by Miercurea Ciuc's players. The former international center Emanuel Cate (207-1997) stepped up and scored 30 points and 6 rebounds (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field) for the winners and American swingman Jalen Jones (201-1993, college: Texas A&M) chipped in 16 points and 6 rebounds. Canadian Meshack Lufile (203-1992, college: Cape Breton) responded with 20 points and 7 rebounds and Serbian point guard Luka Igrutinovic (193-1992) scored 14 points and 5 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Cluj Napoca have an impressive series of fourteen victories in a row. Defending champion keeps a position of league leader, which they share with Oradea. Miercurea Ciuc lost ninth consecutive game. They keep the eighth place with 13 games lost. They share the position with Targu Jiu. Cluj Napoca will meet at home Targu Mures (#7) in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Miercurea Ciuc will play against Pitesti and hope to secure a win.
