There was a minor upset when 5th ranked Ploiesti CSM (8-8) was defeated at home by seventh ranked Sibiu (8-7) 85-73 on Monday. The game was mostly controlled by Sibiu. Ploiesti CSM managed to win third quarter 21-20. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Sibiu won last quarter 23-13. They dominated down low during the game scoring 44 of its points in the paint compared to Ploiesti CSM's 22. Latvian Roberts Blumbergs (208-1998, college: GCU) stepped up and scored 26 points and 7 rebounds for the winners and Argentinian point guard Gaston Whelan (187-1994) chipped in 22 points and 5 assists. American Kenney Funderburk (193-1992, college: Columbus St.) responded with 20 points and 8 rebounds and the other American import point guard Kwamain Mitchell (180-1989, college: St.Louis) scored 19 points. Ploiesti CSM's coach Mihai Popa rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Sibiu moved-up to fourth place, which they share with 4 other teams. Ploiesti CSM lost fifth consecutive game. They dropped to the seventh position with eight games lost. Sibiu will meet at home Targu Mures (#7) in the next round. Ploiesti CSM will have a break next round.
