Second Stage Round 7: Voluntari - Sibiu 104-80
Date: March 25, 2023
Rather predictable result when fourth ranked Voluntari (8-7) smashed at home 6th ranked Sibiu (6-9) 104-80 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Voluntari. Sibiu managed to win second period 22-16. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They made 18-of-21 free shots (85.7 percent) during the game. Voluntari shot the lights out from three sinking 16 long-distance shots on high 57.1 percentage. Croatian center Darko Planinic (212-1990, agency: Interperformances) fired 21 points and 8 rebounds (made all of his seven free throws) for the winners. American point guard Maurice Watson (178-1993, college: Creighton) chipped in 15 points, 9 assists and 4 steals. Five Voluntari players scored in double figures. Croatian guard Paolo Marinelli (191-1995, agency: AltusBasket) produced 19 points and 7 assists and the former international center Rares Uta (211-1997) added 16 points and 7 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) respectively for lost side. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Voluntari. They maintain fourth place with 8-7 record. Loser Sibiu keeps the sixth position with nine games lost. They share it with Pitesti. Voluntari will meet at home league's second-placed Cluj Napoca in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Sibiu will play against the league's leader Oradea (#1) and hope to secure a win.
