But MLP Academics Heidelberg was not able to use a home court advantage and was defeated by the opponent from Berlin 90-81. ALBA Berlin outrebounded MLP Academics Heidelberg 39-23 including a 29-12 advantage in defensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 26 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American Matt Thomas (195-1994, college: Iowa St.) who helped to win the game recording 21 points and 5 rebounds. The former international Johannes Thiemann (206-1994) contributed with a double-double by scoring 14 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Five ALBA Berlin players scored in double figures. American point guard Mike McGuirl (189-1998, college: Kansas St.) answered with 20 points and 7 assists and Belgian Vincent Kesteloot (198-1995) added 20 points in the effort for MLP Academics Heidelberg. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. ALBA Berlin will play against Hakro Merlins in Crailsheim in the next round. MLP Academics Heidelberg will play on the road against Seawolves in Rostock to get more than just one victory in their record.
