Cibona won the championship title tonight. They cruised past Cedevita as guests 64-77 closing the Finals with almost perfect 1-3. This is the 17th Croatian league title in Cibona's history. They finished the season with impressive 19-1 record. Cibona led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They made 16-of-21 free shots (76.2 percent) during the game. Cibona forced 19 Cedevita turnovers. 27 personal fouls committed by Cedevita helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Worth to mention a great performance of Goran Suton (209-85, college: Michigan St.) who helped to win the game recording 13 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Davor Kus (191-78, agency: Interperformances) contributed with 18 points for the winners and Khalid El-Amin netted 16. Four Cibona players scored in double figures. American forward Haywood Owens (204-79, college: Texas, agency: Pro One Sports) replied with 14 points and 8 rebounds and center Dalibor Bagaric (217-80, agency: INVICTUS Sports Group) added 9 points in the effort for Cedevita. Cibona was the regular season champion in Croatia with perfect 14-0 record. They eliminated Zadar with 2-0 in the Semis. Cedevita can also be satisfied with this season. They won the Croatian Cup and reached Adriatic league Finals.
Cedevita beats Zagreb 74-72, wins first Cup ever - Feb 17, 2012
Cedevita is the winner of 2012 Kresimir Cosic Cup. It is the first Cup trophy for the club in its history. In the Big Final, which was played last night, Cedevita grabbed 74-72 victory against Zagreb. Beginning of the last quarter was the crucial period of this game as Cedevita made 10-0 run. Zagreb came to 69-67 in the finish, but Vedran Vukusic (206-F-82, college: Northwestern) immediately responded for Cedevita. Zagreb missed from behind the arc after that and Vukusic made it twice from the line to secure the victory for his team. Matjaz Smodis (205-F-79) was the leading player in Cedevita with 27 points (5 triples). He was named the MVP of the final tournament. Levour Warren (196-F-81, agency: SportsTalent, college: S.Carolina) followed him with 11 points. At the other side, Damir Rancic (199-G-83) shined with 20 points. As a reminder, Zagreb was the Cup winner in 2010 and last year as well. Cedevita eliminated Split in the Semifinals 102-74. They made 13-3 run for 15-point lead in Q3. Miro Bilan (213-F-89) led the winners with 16 points. Matjaz Smodis followed him with two less. In defeat, Josip Sobin (203-G/F-89) and Ivan Mimica (193-G-80) had 23 and 11 points respectively.
