AEL - ENAD 73-33 An exciting game was played in Limassol. Top-ranked AEL faced 4th ranked ENAD. Host AEL (14-0) smashed guests from Nicosia (5-9) 73-33. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of ENAD. The game without a history. AEL led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding ENAD to just 5 points in first quarter and to 13 points in first half. AEL forced 25 ENAD turnovers and outrebounded them 36-20 including a 17-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists comparing to just 5 passes made by ENAD's players. The best player for the winners was American swingman Hailey Leidel (180-1997, college: UMass) who scored 26 points and 7 rebounds. The former international center Eleni Oikonomidou (180-1997) chipped in 15 points and 7 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Four AEL players scored in double figures. Forward Ligia Ioannou (180-2002) produced 7 points and point guard Antonia Nikiforou (165-2002) added 5 points respectively for the guests. AEL have an impressive 14-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 14-0 record. ENAD at the other side keeps the fourth place with nine games lost. AEL are looking forward to face Youth Stars (#5) in the next round. ENAD will play against the league's second-placed Anagennises and it may be a tough game between close rivals. Second ranked Anagennises faced one of their biggest challengers Anorthosis. Host Anagennises (11-3) smashed guests from Larnaca (8-6) 78-49. The game was mostly controlled by Anagennises. Anorthosis was better in second period 13-10. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Anorthosis to just 6 points in fourth quarter. They outrebounded Anorthosis 46-30 including 32 on the defensive glass. American guard Cassidy Mihalko (180-1995, college: CBU) orchestrated the victory by scoring 27 points and 8 rebounds. Naturalized Bulgarian power forward Styliana Velinova (192-2000) contributed with 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 blocks for the winners. Maria Konstantinou (171-1997) replied with 14 points and 7 rebounds and center Georgia Shampoulli (180-2005) added 6 points and 9 rebounds in the effort for Anorthosis. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Defending champion maintains second position with 11-3 record having just three points less than leader AEL. Anorthosis at the other side keeps the third place with six games lost. Anagennises will play against ENAD (#4) in Nicosia in the next round. Anorthosis will play at home against Keravnos and hopes to get back on the winning track. The game was mostly controlled by Youth Stars. Keravnos managed to win second period 19-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Youth Stars held Keravnos to an opponent 22.9 percent shooting from the field compared to 37.9 percent accuracy of the winners. Youth Stars forced 30 Keravnos turnovers. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Youth Stars made 7 blocks. Guard Ellada Gavrielidou (165-2004) had a double-double by scoring 22 points and 15 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and Russian guard Valeriya Pokrovskaya (173-1997, college: Emmanuel, GA) chipped in 16 points and 5 assists during the contest. Naturalized British Chrystalla Merkouri (182-1975) responded with a double-double by scoring 23 points and 13 rebounds and Anna Charalambous (170-2001) scored 7 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. Keravnos' coach Vladimir Zaric gave up on the game allowing to play twelve players seeing no chance for a win. Newly promoted Youth Stars maintains fifth position with 4-10 record. Loser Keravnos still closes the standings with 14 games lost. Youth Stars will meet at home league's leader AEL in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Keravnos will play against Anorthosis (#3) in Larnaca and hopes to get finally their first victory.
