Ukraine's Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University sweep to 2026 U19 title-Apr 10, 2026
Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University delivered a flawless Superfinal campaign to claim the 2026 European Girls Basketball League (EGBL) U19 championship, winning all four games — including a hard-fought 73-68 victory over Estonia's Tallinn Sports Academy in the final. The Ukrainian university programme went unbeaten through the Superfinal round-robin stage before dispatching Tallinn in a rematch to lift the trophy, cementing themselves as the premier U19 women's basketball programme in Europe this season. Their path to the title began with a comfortable 59-46 victory over Latvia's Daugavpils SS in the opening round, followed by a tighter 56-49 win over Tallinn Sports Academy — foreshadowing the final that was to come. A dominant 51-35 demolition of Latvia's BS Riga/Centrs in the third round ensured the Ukrainians topped the group stage and booked their place in the championship game with maximum confidence. The final proved to be the closest contest of the tournament. Tallinn Sports Academy, who had already experienced the Ukrainians' quality in the group stage, came out determined to reverse the result and pushed the Carpathian National University throughout. But the Ukrainians showed the composure and poise of champions, pulling through 73-68 in a five-point victory that was a fitting conclusion to a superb tournament. The individual awards underlined the depth of talent in the Ukrainian squad, with all three honourees born in 2007 — making them just 18 years old and highlighting the exciting future ahead for Ukrainian women's basketball. Polina Tupalo (175-F-2007) was named the Superfinal MVP after a standout tournament across all four games, while Svitlana Poliantseva (181-F-2007) earned a place in the Superfinal All-Stars selection for her consistent contributions throughout the event. Anastasiia Borovska (177-F-2007) was recognised as the Superfinal Team MVP, reflecting her importance to the Carpathian National University's collective effort. The Tournament's All Star Five included Svitlana Poliantseva, Ksenija Petrova (173-G-2007) of Daugavpils, Patricija Drava (2007) of BS Riga/Centrs as well as Laura Grunnman and Lisandra Vetesina (183-F/C-2007) of Tallinn Sports Academy. The EGBL U19 competition brings together leading youth basketball programmes from across the Baltic and Eastern European regions, providing a valuable development platform for the next generation of women's basketball talent. For the Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University, the 2026 title represents a significant achievement for their programme and a proud moment for Ukrainian basketball.
