Hellas is the Champion - Jul.
26, 2009 The amazing kids from Hellas after the European
championship last year and the second place in the world three weeks ago, they
won another European championship succeeding something that no other team has
actually succeeded the last twenty years. After winning the French NT 90-85,
Nikolaos Pappas (194-G-90),
Kostas Papanikolaou (203-F/G-90) and his palls won two golden medals in
European level and one silver medal in World level in just one year!!
Seven players including all five starters scored in double figures led by
tournament MVPKostas Papanikolaou's 15 points as the golden generation
added Hellas's first ever U20 gold to U18 gold in 2008 and silver from this
month's U19 FIBA World Championship.
Konstantinos Sloukas (197-G-90),
Georgios Bogris (208-C/F-89) and
Charalampos Giannopoulos (201-F-89) all scored 14 points;
Leonidas Kaselakis (202-C-90) had 11 points; and
Nikolaos Pappas and
Vladimir Jankovic (203-F-90) each chipped in 10 points.
France guard
Edwin Jackson (191-G-89) poured in a game-high 32 points and
Antoine Diot (191-G-89) - selected as a member of the All-Tournament Team -
added 21 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. And fellow
All-Tournament Team colleague Kevin Saraphin chipped in 10 points, six rebounds
and two blocks.
France had the better start to the game using
Kevin Seraphin (205-F/C-89)'s inside advantage against Bogris to grab a 12-7
lead. And Les Bleus were ahead 14-11 when the Greeks started hitting from long
range. Pappas began the run and Papanikolaou drained long balls from both sides
of the court in helping Greece build a 22-16 lead after one period. Kostas
Missas 's men remained hot in the second quarter with Sloukas hitting from
down town and Papanikolaou's third trifecta opening a 12-point bulge - 28-16.
And it was 31-19 when France began to pull back into the game without
Zisis Sarikopoulos, Papanikolaou and Sloukas in the French line-up.
Jackson and
Kevin Seraphin had room to operate, combining for all 13 points in a 13-6
run to bring Jean-Aymi Toupane's team within 37-32. And
Thomas Heurtel (188-G-89)'s break away layup made it 39-37. Jankovic
answered with a three-point play and Pappas hit from long range with the shot
clock running down and the Greek lead was 45-39 at intermission.
Jackson nailed triples from both sides to lead an 8-0 France run out of the
break for a 47-45 lead. Heurtel later hit from the right wing and Jackson
followed with another three-ball as France built the lead to 59-50.
Greece, however, would score on their next six possessions, including two
Charalampos Giannopoulos three-pointers for a 64-61 Greek lead after three
periods.
Charalampos Giannopoulos's next triple gave the hosts a 10-point gap -
71-61. The French were able to trim the deficit back to five points, but the
Greeks were just too balanced and motivated. 'Everybody is exhausted. That's the reason we won because we all gave
everything we had,' said the Hellene center Zisis
Zisis Sarikopoulos (213-C-90), who was one of seven Greek players to win
both medals this summer. 'This is a special moment. Another gold and first in Europe. We want to
enjoy this moment. Every medal is special. This is special because we are at
home in Rhodes with our friends and family,' said Pappas, a member of
the U19 All-Tournament Team in New Zealand. 'Oh man, I am very tired, very tired. I want to go somewhere far away.
Away from everybody and relax.'
'It's fabulous. I don't know how to tell you how I feel. This summer, this year
closed the best way. I am in the clouds. It's amazing, perfect. Today is our day,'
added Bogris.

Pere Tomas replied with 21 points and 13 rebounds for Spain. Xavier Rabaseda
netted 12 points in the losing case.
Hellas Spain 70-67 and another tremendus victory for
Kostas
Missas youngsters...
The Hellenic NT won the unbeaten team of Spain and simply needs a single win
over Latvia tomorrow to qualify in the semi finals. The game was a monologue for
the Hellenic team of Coach
Kostas
Missas as it took an early lead due to the team spirit and the great sense
of the court in all the edges. Even though the Spaniards were amazing in the
paint, they ended up with 23 offensive rebounds! And 22 defensive they were
really very bad from the three point line as they finished the game with the
unbelievable 5% with 2 out of 19 shots.
Top scorer for the Hellenic team was the captain of the team
Nikolaos Pappas (194-G-90, agency:
FCM) who scored 14 points while Bogris was very close to an amazing triple
double figure as he scored 12 points, 9 rebounds and 8 block shots. Very mature
game from
Kostas Sloukas (197-G-90) with his 14 points becomes better and better game
by game, the young talented guard is obviously that he needed games and minutes
in the court and it will be really pity to remain in Olympiakos as he didn't
play at all year long.
Kostas Sloukas scored 6 out of 6, free throw in the last crucial seconds of
the game and helped a lot his team to grab the victory at the end. Very
passionated game by
Vladimir Jankovic (203-F-90) who netted 10 points but played excellent
defence at the fourth quarter, while
Kostas Papanikolaou (203-F/G-90) was not so good in his offence but his
defence and the last crucial rebound gave the victory to the Hellenic NT.
Leonidas Kaselakis (202-C-90) scored 12 and helped a lot in the rebounding
area as
Zisis Sarikopoulos (213-C-90) played for 9 minutes only.
The game went up to 16 points for Hellas, but very fast the Spaniards with De la
Fuentes (22 points) cut the deficit and over-scored the Hellenic team in the
third quarter by one point. The Hellenes were very passionate and scored two
consecutive three pointers in the most crucial minute of the game being able to
increase the deficit once more to eight before the Spaniards with their first
three pointer (1 out of 17 at that point) cut the deficit to 5 and then with
four free throws from the charity line to cut it even more to one. The last
minutes were tremendous with the Hellenic team winning the game in the details.

years old boy is like that what will be when it reaches the age of 25?? Probably
he will be having fights in the court, a simple answer could be
Te Hellenes have a record of 3-1 and the Spaniards the same but they lost
