Luxembourg outscored Ireland to capture the European Championship for Small Countries title tonight. Nadia Mossong (182-F-86, college: EKU) provided 12 points and 11 rebounds to pace the champions. Luxembourg set the tone early on. They dropped 27 points in the first period to take a 7-point lead. But Ireland denied the deficit in the second term to even things up at 41. Luxembourg followed with a 17-5 run in the third quarter to regain the advantage. Ireland limited their opponents to just 11 points in the fourth frame but could not avoid the defeat. Lisa Jablonowski (190-F-97, college: Virginia) and Esmeralda Skrijelj (175-SF-95) accounted for 11 points each for Luxembourg. Dayna Finn (177-F/G-00) replied with 17 points and 7 rebounds for Ireland.
3-4 Place
Kosovo - Malta 70-60
Kosovo stepped onto the pedestal in Nicosia. They edged Malta to earn the Bronze medals at the championship. Malta grabbed a 26-19 lead after ten minutes. But Kosovo pulled within 2 points at halftime 37-39. Malta restored a four-point lead heading into the fourth term. But Kosovo ignited a 22-8 rally in the final quarter and snatched the win. Era Shatri (182-F/C-98, agency: Promo Sport ID) came up with 17 points and 15 rebounds, while Alexis Tolefree (173-PG-98, college: Arkansas) added 16 points for Kosovo. Josephine Grima (193-C-84) replied with 18 points and 11 rebounds for Malta.


Ireland and Luxembourg advance into Final - Jul 24, 2021

Ireland topped Kosovo to reach the title game in Nicosia. Kosovo jumped to an early lead. They established a 26-18 advantage after ten minutes. But Ireland slowly picked up the tempo. They pulled within one point at the final break. Ireland then exploded with a 32-17 run in the fourth quarter to storm to the victory. Fiona O'Dwyer (182-F-91, college: Emmanuel, MA) posted 20 points and 10 rebounds, while Sorcha Tiernan (177-F/G-99) added 19 points for the winners. Saranda Daci (190-C-93) replied with 18 points and 10 rebounds for Kosovo.

Luxembourg - Malta 89-46
Luxembourg cruised past Malta to advance into Final. Luxembourg looked dominant from start to finish. They grabbed a 26-15 lead after ten minutes. They followed with a 24-10 run in the second quarter to secure a 50-25 halftime lead. Luxembourg triggered a strong 24-9 run in the fourth period to ease to the victory. Anne Simon (173-G-00) produced 19 points, while Nadia Mossong (182-F-86, college: EKU) added 16 points for the winners. Josephine Grima (193-C-84) replied with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists for Malta.



Semifinals are set in Nicosia - Jul 22, 2021
Malta - Ireland 48-78
Ireland cruised past Malta to clinch the top place in Group A. Ireland stayed ahead in the first half taking a 43-29 halftime lead. Ireland held their opponents to just 19 points in the second half and raced to the victory. Claire Melia (190-F-99) provided 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Rachel Hujisdens added 10 points for the winners. Kristy Galea (170-G-00) answered with 14 points for Malta.

Luxembourg - Cyprus 90-60
Luxembourg coasted past Cyprus to improve at 2-0 record atop of Group B. Luxembourg dropped 28 points in the second term to ensure a 13-point halftime lead. They followed with a 25-11 run in the third term to take an unassailable lead. Anne Simon (173-G-00) and Nadia Mossong (182-F-86, college: EKU) accounted for 17 points each in the victory. Petra Orlovic (178-F/G-90) answered with 20 points and 7 rebounds for Cyprus.
