Saarlouis Royals back-to-back winner of German Cup Championship - Mar 23, 2009

The winner T-Shirts displayed the words 'oops, we did it again' as the TV Saarlouis Royals the number one seeded team after regular season won the German Cup Final Four and repeated their success from 2008. But loosing topscorer Fantasia Goodwin (179-G/F-85, agency: LBM Management) with an ankle injury in the semi-finale the Royals also paid high price. This years event took place in Oberhausen but the hosting evo New Basket Oberhausen could not use their home court advantage and struggled throughout the whole tournament finishing fourth. Besides Saarlouis the big winner of this first title event of the season are the ChemCats Chemnitz. In the semi-final they beat Oberhausen in a 56-60 overtime thriller led by Corrie Fertitta (185-F-86) who shined with 18 points in the second half and 27 overall. Allthough they did not have any chance in the 46-88 title game against old and new champion Saarlouis it is still remarkable that the second last seeded team in the league finished the 2009 German Cup Championship with a silver medal. With Eisvogel USC Freiburg another team who struggled in the regular season could use the Finale Four event to polish this memorable 2008/09 season. Beating the hosts in front of their home crowd in the petite finale they repeated their success from 2008 as well and finished as back-to-back bronze medal winner. With eight seconds to go in a tied 83-83 game Sarah Hayes (173-G-84, college: Brown) drove hard to the hoop and found her teammate Hope Foster (187-F/C-86, college: Bucknell) underneath the basket who secured the 85-83 win for her team. Freiburg finished the game with an 13-0 run! For her intense play throughout the weekend Hayes was later named MVP of the tournament.
