Saarlouis defend their DBBL title - May 15, 2010

Saarlouis - Wasserburg 74:68 (OT)

Saarlouis claimed the 2009/10 DBBL title. They overcame Wasserburg in the dramatic fifth game of the championship series to clinch the second straight title. Stina Barnert (176-G-89) scored 24 points and grabbed 7 rebounds to lead Saarlouis to the victory. It was the third consecutive year that Saarlouis and Wasserburg played in the title series. Wasserburg looked better at the start of the clash winning two opening games however the Royals bounced back and stole the title after posting three victories in a row.
The Royals got to the confident start to the game. The hosts built a 20:15 lead ten minutes into the encounter. Saarlouis maintained the advantage throughout the second frame. They ensured a 7-point cushion at the interval 41:34. But things changed drastically in the third period. Wasserburg performed some first class defense in the third term limiting the Royals to only 9 points. It allowed the visitors to surge ahead as they were up by 2 points. But Saarlouis denied the deficit forcing overtime. The Royals did not give a chance for the visitors in the extra period rallying to the historic win at the end.
Petra Manakova (192-F/C-82, college: Oakland) and Janina Wellers (180-F-88) delivered 10 points apiece for the winners. Jana Furkova (185-C/F-84) responded with 18 points and 9 rebounds for Wasserburg. Tamara Tatham (187-F-85, college: Massachusetts) had 11 points in the loss.

Saarlouis: Stina Barnert 24, Petra Manakova 10, Janina Wellers 10
Wasserburg: Jana Furkova 18, Tamara Tatham 11

Saarlouis Royals capture first title of the season - Mar 30, 2010

In front of 1700 enthusiastic fans the German Regular Season Champion Saarlouis was able to defend the German Cup Championship title for the second time to make it a 'Threepeat' (2008, 2009 and now 2010). One week before the start of the Play Offs the fans enjoyed the first highlight of this years season. For the third time after 2006 and 2008 the Top4 tournament was hosted in Saarlouis by the hometown club who proved again the commitment and devotion of the whole Royals organisation crew and supporters. The helping hands of 100 volunteers created a memorable fine basketball event. The basketball played by the participating teams was packed with highlights, emotions and the ultimate will to win, that worked the appetite for more of that in the upcoming Play Offs.

In the first semifinal on Saturday TSV 1880 Wasserburg cruised by Eisvogel USC Freiburg with ease and booked their ticket for the final game on Sunday with a 77-50 win. In the second semifinal WWK Donau-Ries Noerdlingen that had struggled throughout the whole season almost came up with a huge upset. After already leading 38-28 at halftime the hosting Royals just barely came away with a narrow 65-61 win of the Bavarian guests. Royals head coach Rene Spandauw later admitted that only the more fortunate team had won this game.

On Sunday at first Freiburg ran over Donau-Ries 27-13 in the first quarter to lead the way for their eventual 88-65 victory in the game for the third place. For Freiburg this was also the third year in a row that the club had captured the bronze medal in this competition! In the following Final Saarlouis kept on struggling when facing a zone defense. Wasserburg forced a lot of TOs in the first half and shot with a good percentage from the floor to lead 39-30 at the halftime break. In the second half Saarlouis managed to crawl back into the game with high speed fast breaks and second chance points. But still Wasserburg proved why they had swept the series against the defending champion throughout the Regular Season and hung in the game. But in the end the deeper rotation may have decided this game for Saarlouis. Wasserburg just made too many mistakes down the stretch but also had to deal with some horrible decision by the referees against them that made it hard for the five time German Champion (2004-2008) to celebrate their silver medal. The final result of 78-67 does not represent this nailbiter. The game was undecided until the last minute of the game.

For her stellar performance underneath the baskets where she cleared the boards and added 18 points Tyresa Smith (183-F-85, agency: LBM Management) was named the MVP of the Final.

Eurobasket congratulates all teams of this Final Four event for their play with heart and emotions. Good luck for TV Saarlouis Royals, TSV 1880 Wasserburg and Eisvogel USC Freiburg in the upcoming Play Offs.
