Chelyabinsk makes history: Chelbasket clinch first Superliga title with road demolition of Khimki in Game 6-May 23, 2026
Chelbasket Chelyabinsk are Fonbet Superliga champions for the first time in the club's history, crushing Khimki 79-61 on the road in Game 6 to win the best-of-seven finals 4-2 and complete a fairytale rise from Superliga newcomers to national champions in just three seasons.
In their debut 2023-24 Superliga campaign, Chelbasket finished 13th. Last season they climbed to eighth. Now, guided by head coach Goran Vuckovic, they stand at the summit of Russian second-tier basketball the only Chelyabinsk club competing for a championship in any major team sport this season.
Maksim Kondakov (185-PG-1995, agency: Alti Sport) led the clincher with 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting and six assists, controlling the tempo throughout. Dzmitry Ryuny (206-F-2000, college: Oregon St.) added 15 points on an efficient 7-of-9 from the field with eight rebounds, while Ruslan Tumanov (195-G/F-1991, agency: Stanislav Ryzhov) contributed 12 points and four rebounds. Cortez Edwards (188-PG-1997, college: Southern Miss, agency: LHZ Sport Agency) who had been Chelbasket's talisman throughout the playoffs delivered 18 points on 9-of-18 shooting, and Nathaniel Pollard Jr. (196-F-2000, college: UMES, agency: Elevate Sports Alliance) Jr. posted 11 points with 10 rebounds.
Chelbasket set the tone from the opening tip, winning the first quarter 18-18 before pulling away with a 19-13 second period to lead 37-31 at halftime. A 21-13 third quarter extended the advantage to 58-44, and the fourth was more of the same at 21-17 as Khimki's offense shot a dismal 32 percent from the field (19-of-60) and just 28 percent from two-point range.
For Khimki, who had fought back from 1-3 down to win Game 5 at home and force a decider, Klim Adaykin (195-SG-2005, agency: Stanislav Ryzhov) led with nine points but shot 3-of-9. Konstantin Shevchuk (189-G-2000) and Maksim Maxim Tkachenko (185-PG-1992, agency: Stanislav Ryzhov) each had eight, while Artem Vostrikov (201-F-1996) added eight on 3-of-4 shooting. But the hosts' 32 percent team shooting and inability to generate clean looks against Chelbasket's stifling defense left them with no path back into the contest.
The series was a thriller from start to finish. Chelbasket won Game 1 at home 94-87 in overtime, took Game 2 in Chelyabinsk, split Games 3 and 4 on the road (losing 87-106 before winning 89-81 in another overtime classic featuring a decisive Edwards-Nathaniel Pollard Jr. combination), then dropped Game 5 at home 61-74 before sealing the championship with this commanding road victory.
