USA roll past France, win fifth straight U17 World Cup title - Jul 9, 2018

Group FINAL
France - USA 52-95
United States remained the dominant kings of the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup as they clinched their fifth straight title with a resounding 95-52 victory over France in the 2018 Final. Isaiah Stewart (203-F-01) paced four USA players in double figures with 15 points to go with 9 rebounds while De'Vion Harmon (188-SG-01) scored 14 points, Romeo Weems (195-F-01) had 12 points and 9 rebounds and Jalen Green (196-G-02) chipped in 11 points. In locking up their fifth consecutive U17 crown, the United States extended their winning streak to 37 games, dating back to the inaugural event in 2010. France meanwhile had already secured their best-ever showing just by reaching the Final and can head home happy with a second-placed showing. Killian Hayes (194-G-01) was France's top performer in the game with 10 points while Maxime Carene (205-C-01) chipped in 9 points and 4 blocks. But all that was not enough, especially since the big three of Hayes, Malcolm Cazalon (198-G-01) and Theo Maledon (193-G-00) combined for just 24 points - 23.1 points below their average coming into the game. The American defense stifled the French in the early going and built a 12-7 lead, which Don Showalter's men extended to 19-13 on Green's three-pointer. The gap was 23-14 after 10 minutes. France continued to fight and had trimmed the gap to 25-20 with six minutes left in the first half. But the Americans buckled down defensively and went on a 20-2 run to open a 45-22 advantage. Hayes knocked down a three-pointer just before the half-time buzzer and it was 45-25 at intermission. There was no making in-roads into the USA advantage in the third quarter as France first off could not get any spots on defense and the Americans remained determined to not let any actions come easy - predominantly on France's famed trio. The gap was 77-38 after three quarters. The drama was over and the fourth quarter really only offered the USA players chances for some highlight reel plays and a countdown to the celebration for the now five-time U17 World Cup champions.

Group 3rd Place
Puerto Rico - Canada 90-77
uerto Rico wrote the first global podium finish chapter in their history as they defeated Canada 90-77 to take third place at the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2018. Jermaine Miranda (195-SG-01) scored 24 points and Tory San Antonio (194-F/G-01) added 23 points, while Andre Curbelo (187-PG-01) chipped in 12 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals in the biggest victory in Puerto Rico's youth history.

Rewiev of 1/2 Finals in Argentina - Jul 8, 2018

Puerto Rico - France 73-78
Very close game for Puerto Rico and France in first semifinal game of World Championship U17. Even that Puerto Rico won last quarter with almost double digit difference, they didn't manage to turn on game in their favor as France beat them with 73:78. Key in this was second quarter for France, they won it with 17:27 and after first quarter win with 3 points went on half time with more then enough lead so they cannot splash it. Two players from France shared same amount of points in this game, Killian Hayes (194-G-01) and Malcolm Cazalon (198-G-01) scored each 20 points and led their time to big final against USA. In losing team 4 players scored 10+ points but that was not enough this time to score a win against France. Most efficient was Jermaine Miranda (195-SG-01) with 14 points and 7 rebounds, he also added 2 assists.

Canada - USA 71-120
Again, USA team didn't have any problems in winning a game against their opponent. They struggle only in first quarter which Canada won it with 28:21 but after that they just start playing their game and dominate through all three remaining quarters. 14:33, 13:29 and 16:37 for final result of 71:120 and another big final for USA team. They will have chance to fight in the final against France and win their fifth gold medal in a row on U17 Tournament. Jalen Green (196-G-02) scored 25 points, Scott Barnes (200-SG-01) scored 18 with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. In Canada best was Addison Patterson (198-F-01) with 15 points and 6 rebounds.

Group Class 5-8
Australia - Croatia 71-54
Croatia didn't have time to recover from tough loss against USA so Australia overcome them in games for battle for fifth place. Luke Jackson (198-F-01) led Australia with double-double performance (10 points + 15 rebounds) to victory of 71:54. In Croatia Matej Rudan (196-F-01, agency: BeoBasket) scored 20 points with 5 assists.

Group Class 5-8
Montenegro - Turkey 65-101
Mustafa Kurtuldum (196-G-01) shined in Turkish victory against Montenegro. He scored 28 points while shooting from the field really well. He splashed three - three pointers out of seven attempts, he also had six from seven for two points. Great game for him and he brings home MVP award for this game. He was followed from Alperen Sengun (204-F/C-02) with double-double performance 20 points + 13 rebounds. In Montenegro only player in good mood was Bojan Tomasevic (202-F-01) who scored almost half of entire points for losing team. He had 31 point and 6 rebounds.

Group Class 9-12
Argentina - Serbia 54-74
After defeat in Eight-finals against Turkey, Serbia secured two victories in a row. So after they beat Argentina with +20 they will face Dominican Republic in a game which will decide who will take ninth place in this tournament. Lazar Vasic (193-G-01) scored 9 points with 4 rebounds for Serbia, in Argentina Agustin Cavallin (183-PG-01) scored 14 points.

Group Class 9-12
Mali - Dominican Republic 108-110
In a biggest result game of the Day 6 in Argentina, Dominican Republic out-gunned Mali with 110:108. We saw amazing game from both teams but Dominican side was better this time for only 2 point. David Jones scored amazing 39 points with 15 rebounds for Dominican Republic but true MVP with 5 index points more was Jean Montero (185-G-03) with 33 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. He was shooting 10/22 for 2PT. Even they out-rebounded their opponents, Mali didn't won this game, they took 16 more rebounds (62:46) and Oumar Ballo (204-C-02) had 32 (!!!) in the game of his life so far. 32 rebounds, 32 rebounds for total index of 52! Just amazing game for him and his teammates.

Group Class 13-16
China - New Zealand 57-62
23 points from Mitchell Dance and 17 points from Marvin Williams-Dunn (170-PG-01) was enough for New Zealand to beat China with 5 points difference. Shihao Zhao scored 14 points for losing team.

Philippines - Egypt 70-69
Kaitlyn Soto (172-G-90) led his Philippines to victory against Egypt in a very close game. One point is separating victory from defeat but this time Philippine side was victorious. The won with 70:69 and Kaitlyn Soto led them with 28 points and 17 rebounds. In Egypt best was Aly Khalifa (201-F-01) with 17 points and 8 rebounds.

Rewiev of 1/4 Finals in Argentina - Jul 7, 2018

USA - Croatia 126-52
+74 points margin game in knock-out phase is not something we seen that often. USA just showed their dominance and completely outplayed Croatia in this game. USA side won every quarter in the match and most efficient was 2nd part as they won it with 39:10. Croatia just didn't have any respond in this match. In USA every player scored at least 2 points, most efficient was Jalen Green (196-G-02) with 27, he was followed by Scott Barnes (200-SG-01) with 17 and Evan Mobley (211-SF-01) with 15. Romeo Weems (195-F-01) had double-double game (10 points + 13 rebounds). In losing team Ivan Gulin (194-G-01) scored 16 points.

Puerto Rico - Montenegro 75-60
Quarter number three was key in this game for Puerto Rico. Half time was ended with close result 36:31 but then after break time Puerto Rico switched to six gear and won it with 25:16. That was enough for South American side to control last quarter and go into semifinals. Tory San Antonio (194-F/G-01) dominated this game with 30 points and 6 rebounds, Andre Curbelo (187-PG-01) helped him with 20 points and 8 rebounds. For Montenegro Bojan Tomasevic (202-F-01) was best with double-double performance (10 points + 10 rebounds).

Australia - Canada 70-74
Canada made it! They overcome Australian team in very close game. Canada won first quarter with 15:21, but Australia responded back with 15:11 in second part of the game. Maybe crucial part of the game was done by Keeshawn Barthelemy (188-G-01) who was calm from free throw line (he scored 4/4 in last 25 seconds), he scored total of 10 points and he had 5 assists, but best player for Canada in this game was Addison Patterson (198-F-01) with 18 points. In losing team of Australia best was Luke Travers (197-G-01) with 20 points and 6 rebounds and amazing game for Luke Jackson (198-F-01) with 12 points and 20 (!) rebounds. Canada is going to semifinals!

Turkey - France 70-86
This was a no problem game for France when they have three players that was in super mood for this game. Theo Maledon (193-G-00), Malcolm Cazalon (198-G-01) and Killian Hayes (194-G-01) combined 74 points together. They led France to semifinal game where they will meet against Puerto Rico. In losing team of Turkey best was Alperen Sengun (204-F/C-02) with 26 points and 17 rebounds for 35 minutes on the court.

Group Classs 9-16
Dominican Republic - Egypt 67-65
In the closest game of the day Dominican Republic managed to win against Egypt with 2 point margin and that's how they are now in a spot where they can fight for ninth place on this tournament. Key moment on this game was blocked shot by David Jones (194-F/G-01). He blocked Momen Hassan (195-F/G-01) who went on layup for going into overtime but Dominican player blocked him and led his team to win in this game. David Jones scored 23 points with 12 rebounds for Dominican Republic, while in losing team Aly Khalifa (201-F-01) scored 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.

China - Argentina 69-95
This was no problem for Juan Francisco Fernandez (205-C-02) and his teammates who splashed almost 100 points in this game against China. Juan Francisco Fernandez helped Argentina to scored 21 points and grab 12 rebounds, Ezequiel Paz (181-PG-01) had 19 points, same as Agustin Cavallin (183-PG-01). Jiao Boqiao (209-C-01) for China scored 21 points while grabbing 14 rebounds.

Mali - Philippines 95-59
What game for Mali this night! They won against Philippines with 36 point difference. Amazing game for all players but Oumar Ballo (204-C-02) and Siriman Kanoute (175-G-01) will remember this night very well. Oumar Ballo scored 28 points with 19 rebounds for index 43 (!) which gives him absolutely MVP of the game award, while Siriman scored 30 points with 8 rebounds and 7 assists. In Philippines best was Raven Cortez (201-PF-02) with 10 points and 4 rebounds.

Serbia - New Zealand 78-51
Starting five players was key for Serbia win this game, the scored 52 out of 78 points for European side this game and they easily won against New Zealand 51:78. They out-rebounded New Zealand team with 29:56 rebounds in total and they have 12 assist more. Djordje Pazin (200-SF-01), Aleksandar Langovic (206-F-01) and Aleksej Pokusevski (212-F-01) combined 28 rebounds and 52 points.

Rewiev of 1/8 Finals in Argentina - Jul 5, 2018

Egypt - Croatia 55-68
Croatia will be the favorites going into this one but the young Europeans should be forewarned by the Africans' performance against Montenegro, having come back from a four-point first quarter to build a 12-point fourth quarter before giving it up and losing in overtime. Egypt, who opened the tournament with a win over New Zealand, will have learned a lot from the Montenegro collapse despite the quick turnaround. Croatia, for their part, were looking good after beating Philippines and Argentina by 22 and 19 points, respectively in the first two games. But Damir Miljkovic (194-G-80)'s Croatians were rolled by U16 European champions France by 28 points - scoring just five points in the fourth quarter of the rematch of last summer's U16 European Semi-Final. Croatia's only previous U17 World Cup appearance saw them grab third place in 2012. If they want to get back there, Matej Rudan (196-F-01, agency: BeoBasket) and co. will have to bounce back with a win over a tough, determined Egypt.

Puerto Rico - China 81-64
Puerto Rico is probably one of the big surprises of the group stage, having taken first place in a group that includes Australia, Dominican Republic and Turkey. But Omar Gonzalez has his Puerto Ricans playing great basketball and hungry to go deep in this tournament - starting against winless China. Puerto Rico's only loss was a two-point thriller to Australia but they grabbed the top spot in the three-way tie with Australia and Turkey. Puerto Rico are making their second appearance and have only lost twice in the history of this competition - both times to the Aussies, the other being the 2014 Quarter-Finals. Puerto Rico have gotten different players to step up as leaders in each game, making them a hard team to shut down. China were lambasted by United States in their opener by 78 points but fought hard against Serbia and Mali - losing by 12 in both of those games. China reached the Quarter-Finals the first three U17 World Cups - finishing seventh all three times - but bowed out in the Round of 16 two years ago in Zaragoza.

Montenegro - Argentina 73-60
Montenegro had a strong group showing in their maiden U17 World Cup appearance in holding tough with Canada for about 32 minutes and then beating New Zealand, before coming back from 12 points down in the fourth quarter to knock off Egypt in overtime. Montenegro showed their class last summer in beating the likes of Spain, Italy, Lithuania and Serbia in a span of seven days before losing the FIBA European Championship 2017 final. Now is money time for Mladen Ostojic's Montenegro with a showdown against hosts Argentina. The South Americans have only reached the top eight once - with a sixth-placed finish in 2012. After losing to France and Croatia in their first two games, Argentina showed some mental fortitude against Philippines, building an 11-point lead before squandering it only to come up big in the clutch and pull out the victory.

Australia - Mali 74-65
If the group action is any indication of Australia, then it's that they are well-versed in close games - as well as how to and how not to deal with big leads late. All three of Australia's games were decided by two points. Against Dominican Republic, they trailed by double digits in the fourth quarter but came back to win. A day later though they gave up a 13-point fourth quarter advantage and lost to Turkey. In their final group game, Australia fought a big battle with Puerto Rico and prevailed in the closing seconds. Mali entered the competition as U16 African champions for the first time and have shown that the country has taken a big step. They started by giving Serbia a real scare, even leading late in the third quarter. Mali got the usual United States treatment for an overwhelmed foe - a 57-point loss. But they followed that up by picking up a strong 12-point win over China. But can Mali pull off the upset over the 2012 and 2014 runners-up?

New Zealand - France 48-88
New Zealand have not had the start to their first-ever U17 World Cup that they had hoped, losing all three Group C games - by 14 points to Egypt, by 24 points to Montenegro and by 36 points to Canada. Things don't get any easier for the Tall Blacks as they next face the U16 European champions France in the Round of 16. New Zealand will pretty much need a perfect game to knock off the French. Lamine Kebe's France meanwhile have been rolling in Rosario, easing past hosts Argentina in their opener by 32 points, walloping Philippines by 41 and then giving up just five points in the fourth quarter in blowing by Croatia by 28 points. France really should not have many problems with New Zealand unless they catch themselves thinking past the Tall Blacks and looking forward to an all-European Quarter-Final against either Turkey or Serbia.

Turkey - Serbia 87-68
Turkey come into the Round of 16's only all-European showdown with Serbia having eased past Dominican Republic by 33 points, which gave them a chance to rest their top players a bit. The runners-up from 2016 lost their opener to Puerto Rico and then came back from 13 points down in the fourth quarter to beat Australia in the final seconds by two points. Serbia, on the other hand, had two mixed bags in their first two games. They built and lost a big lead but had a strong final 13 minutes to beat Mali by 12 points and Serbia looked less than impressive in beating by China by the same 12 point mark. Then came a 32-point blowout by the United States in which Serbia turned the ball over 38 times. The question for the Serbs will be how deflated were they after that dismantling and can they rebound in time to bring the fight needed against Turkey?

Canada - Philippines 102-62
Canada have taken care of business in Group C and enter the Round of 16 as one of the top challengers to the United States. Canada pulled away from Montenegro in their opener to win by 25 points. And then they throttled Egypt by 40 points and dusted off New Zealand by 38 points - in a game that meant nothing for Canada since they had already won the group. Canada's worst enemy against Philippines will likely be themselves - if they look past the Asians thinking about a Quarter-Final against Australia or Mali and then the much-anticipated possible Semi-Final with the United States. Philippines meanwhile come into the game with three defeats from group play. They were beaten soundly by Croatia and France by 22 and 31 points, respectively. Philippines gave a real battle to Argentina in the final group game but succumbed to the hosts by three points, missing three potential game-tying three-pointers in the final 25 seconds.

Dominican Republic - USA 60-103
Dominican Republic are the next team to have a chance to end the United States on-going U17 World Cup winning streak of 33 games - the Americans have never lost in the competition. But the Dominicans have not tasted a victory in Argentina yet - though they managed to have a double-digit fourth quarter lead on Australia only to lose by two points in their opener. That was followed by a 15-point loss to fellow FIBA Americas side Puerto Rico and a 33-point defeat at the hands of Turkey. The Dominicans are making their second straight showing at the U17 World Cup and even if they lose they can still best their previous showing of 11th in 2016. The United States have been running away from their competition, creating absolute mayhem in booking wins by 78 points against China, 57 versus Mali and 32 points against Serbia. Eight Americans are averaging at least 8.0 points and only two are averaging more than 21 minutes played. Almost amazingly, nine USA players are averaging 1.7 steals or more as Don Showalter's press has forced 118 turnovers in the three games - almost a turnover per minute. The realistic question for Dominican Republic is not if they can withstand the endless waves of defensive attack from USA, but only when will they succumb to it.
