USA captured the fourth win in a row at the 2023 World Cup as they held off Montenegro in Group J action in Manila today. Anthony Edwards (6'5''-G-2001, college: Georgia) stepped up with 17 points for the winners as they gained the fourth straight win.
USA and Montenegro stayed neck and neck throughout intense first half. USA eked out an 18-17 lead after ten minutes. Montenegro bounced back with a 20-18 run in the second period to snatch a 38-37 halftime advantage. USA pulled in front late in the third term as Jaren Jackson Jr. (6'11''-F/C-1999, college: Michigan St.) and Anthony Edwards gave them a 56-51 lead. USA entered the final period up by 6 points 61-55. Austin Reaves (6'5''-G-1998, college: Oklahoma) and Jaren Jackson Jr. gave USA a 77-69 advantage with under two minutes remaining and then Mikal Bridges (6'6''-G/F-1996, college: Villanova) converted a layup to open a double-digit lead for the North American side as they rallied to the victory. Austin Reaves delivered 12 points, while Jaren Jackson Jr. had 11 points in the win. Montenegro responded with 18 points and 16 rebounds from Nikola Vucevic (7'0''-PF-1990, college: USC). Kendrick Perry (6'0''-PG-1992, college: YSU) tossed in 14 points.
