Puerto Rico opened 2023 World Cup Second Round with an impressive victory over their Latin American rivals Dominican Republic to improve at 3-1 record in Group I. Tremont Waters (180-PG-1998, college: LSU, agency: Shark Sports Management) was the force for the winners with 37 points, 11 assists and 7 rebounds.
Puerto Rico grabbed a 17-12 lead after the opening quarter. Dominican Republic stepped on the gas in the second frame. Karl-Anthony Towns (213-F/C-1995, college: Kentucky) and his teammates unloaded 33 points in the period to tie things up at 45. Dominican Republic surged ahead in the third term. They sank 29 points to take a 5-point lead at the final intermission. It all came down to the final seconds in this one. George Conditt IV (208-C-2000, college: Iowa St.) converted a three-point play for Puerto Rico to give them a 93-91 lead with just over two minutes to go. Dominican Republic answered with quick four points to take a 95-93 lead. Tremont Waters and John Holland (196-SF-1988, college: Boston U.) bounced back with five points of their own to regain the lead for Puerto Rico 98-95. Tremont Waters and Jordan Howard (180-PG-1996, college: Cent Arkansas) went perfect from the stripe and Puerto Rico sealed the crucial win at the end. George Conditt IV posted 18 points and 7 rebounds in the victory. Karl-Anthony Towns answered with game-high 39 points and 10 rebounds, while Andres Feliz (188-G-1997, college: Illinois) had 22 points in the loss.
