Latvia earned the fifth place at the 2023 World Cup. They stormed past their Baltic rivals Lithuania to close their tournament campaign on a high note. Arturs Kurucs (193-PG-2000) finished with 20 points to lead the winners.
Latvia sank 28 points in the first period to open an 8-point lead. Arturs Arturs Zagars (190-G-2000) gave them a double-digit cushion midway through the second period 40-30. Latvia arrived at the big break up by 11 points 49-38. The third quarter turned into a lop-sided affair. Latvia ignited a massive 28-9 run to clear off for good. They cruised to the victory in the final period. Arturs Zagars set up a new World Cup record with 17 assists, while Rolands Smits (207-PF-1995) posted 17 points for the winners. Rokas Jokubaitis (193-PG-2000) answered with 16 points, while Jonas Valanciunas (213-C-1992) accounted for 15 points and 8 rebounds in an embarrassing loss for disappointing Lithuania.
