Canada earned the Bronze medals at the 2023 World Cup. They outscored their North American rivals USA in the exciting overtime thriller in Manila tonight. Dillon Brooks (6'7''-G/F-1996, college: Oregon) stepped up with 39 points to lead the winners.
Canada entered the game firing on all cylinders. They erupted for 34 points in the opening ten minutes to take a 9-point lead. But USA quickly denied the deficit and tied things up at 46 midway through the period. Canada managed to secure a narrow 58-56 advantage at the big break. Nickeil Alexander-Walker (6'5''-G-1998, college: Virginia Tech) gave Canada an 87-78 lead late in the third period. They built a 91-82 advantage heading into the fourth frame. USA once again denied the deficit as Austin Reaves (6'5''-G-1998, college: Oklahoma) tied things up at 10 with just under four minutes to go in regulation. Josh Hart then gave USA a 102-100 lead with under three minutes left. Dillon Brooks hit a timely three-pointer to ensure a 106-105 advantage for Canada. Anthony Edwards (6'5''-G-2001, college: Georgia) responded with a layup to regain the advantage for USA. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (6'6''-PG-1998, college: Kentucky) secured a 109-107 lead for Canada with 34 seconds remaining. Dillon Brooks followed with a pair of free throws to extend the lead at 111-107. But Mikal Bridges made a free throw and then came up with a key offensive rebound that led to his three-pointer to knot things up at 111 forcing overtime. However Shai Gilgeous-Alexander took over in the extra period. He sank 9 points to steer Canada to the Bronze medals. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 31 points and 12 assists, while RJ Barrett Jr. (6'6''-F/G-2000, college: Duke) contributed 23 points for Canada. Anthony Edwards replied with 24 points for USA. Austin Reaves banked in 23 points in the loss.
