From FIBA World Cup to the NBA: 5 European Stars Who Made the Jump- September 15, 2023In recent years the NBA has seen an influx of European stars head across the pond and subsequently go on to dominate. The first to come to the fore was Greek sensation Giannis Antetokounmpo. The 28-year-old power forward has catapulted the Milwaukee Bucks to become one of the most feared franchises in the league, topping the Eastern Conference regular season standings last term as well as leading them to a first Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy in five decades back in 2021.
Next up we have Luka Doncic. The talented young Slovenian star burst onto the scene in the EuroLeague with Real Madrid, where he became the youngest player in the team's history at just 16 years of age. He quickly became Los Blancos' best player and was promptly drafted first overall by the Dallas Mavericks back in 2018. Since then, he has gone on to become one of the NBA's biggest stars, being given All-Star honors in four consecutive seasons since 2019. However, without a doubt, the biggest European star in the league at present is Serbian behemoth Nikola Jokic. The Joker was the star of the show last season as he led the Denver Nuggets to the first championship in franchise history, picking up the MVP award in the 4-1 Finals victory over the underdog Miami Heat. With the 24-year-old on board, popular NBA odds providers have made the Colorado-based outfit 5.75 favorites to retain their crown next season. Over the course of the last few weeks, however, European nations have proven that there is plenty more talent arriving on the conveyor belt. The 2023 FIBA World Cup recently took place in East Asia, and the continent’s finest proved that if the Americans don't start taking the competition seriously, they may very well get left behind. Despite 23 points from Anthony Edwards, the Stars and Stripes were defeated in the semifinals by eventual champions Germany. Serbia also managed to finish as runners-up, despite not having their star man Jokic available for selection. Players such as Latvia's Arturs Žagars and Serbia's Nikola Milutinov both had impressive tournaments. The former currently plies his trade in Lithuania with Nevežis Kedainiai while the latter is a key player for Olympiacos. Could either of those two follow in the footsteps of these five men, all of whom went on to make their presence felt in the NBA after dominating at the FIBA World Cup? Yao Ming - China First on our list is Yao Ming. The giant Chinese center took the world by storm when he played at the 2002 FIBA World Cup, securing an All-team selection despite the Chinese finishing way down in 11th in the tournament standings. He displayed incredible talent throughout the course of the competition, providing onlookers that he had much more to offer than height and wingspan. It didn't take long for him to be drafted by the Houston Rockets, where he made his debut later that year, quickly becoming one of the most dominant big men in the league, earning All-NBA honors eight times. Peja Stojakovic - FR Yugoslavia Next on our list is Peja Stojakovic. He is a Serbian basketball player who played for the Yugoslavian National Team at the 1998 FIBA World Cup. He emerged as one of the top scorers of his team and helped his team to the 3rd place. It wasn't long after that the NBA came calling for him. He played for teams like the Sacramento Kings, the Indiana Pacers, and the Dallas Mavericks, earning accolades such as a 3-time NBA All-Star and winning the 3-Point Shooting Contest twice. Manu Ginóbili - Argentina Joining them is Argentinian sensation Manu Ginóbili, who featured prominently for La Albiceleste at the 2002 FIBA World Cup, quickly becoming one of the most exciting players to watch in the tournament. Ginóbili was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs back in 1999 however, he never made an appearance for them. That was until he shone brightly at the aforementioned World Cup, showing the Texas-based outfit exactly what they were missing out on. After that, there was no looking back, and the talented Argentine went on to become a crucial player in the Spurs' championship dynasty, becoming a staggering four-time NBA champion and two-time NBA All-Star. Luis Scola - Argentina The fourth player on our list is Luis Scola. He is an Argentine basketball player who played for the Argentine National Team during the 2002 FIBA World Cup, where he proved himself as one of the best players in the tournament. He was quickly picked up by the Houston Rockets, where he earned the All-Rookie First Team award in his first season. He continued to play for different teams in the NBA and earned NBA All-Star honors with the Indiana Pacers. Nicolas Batum - France Lastly, we have Nicolas Batum, a French basketball player who played for the French National Team at the 2014 FIBA World Cup. He emerged as one of the best all-around players in the tournament, catching the eye of NBA scouts. He played for teams, including the Portland Trail Blazers, the Charlotte Hornets, and the Los Angeles Clippers. While he never achieved NBA All-Star status, Batum has shown that he can play and compete at a high level. |
