Iceland got to a sizzling start of their 2027 World Cup European Qualifiers. The Nordic state stunned Italy in Rome in Group D opener. Elvar Fridriksson (182-PG-1994, college: Barry) stepped up with 29 points, while Tryggvi Hlinason (215-C-1997) added 16 points for the visitors. Iceland snatched a 38-34 halftime advantage. They stayed red hot offensively in the third period. Iceland dropped 23 points in the frame to ensure a 7-point lead heading into the fourth stanza. Italy went on a strong rally in the final quarter as Amedeo Della Valle gave the hosts a 76-74 lead with just over a minute remaining. But Elvar Fridriksson converted a three-point play to restore the lead for Iceland. He followed with four consecutive free throws to seal the victory for the visitors. Davide Casarin (197-G-2003) tossed in 19 points, while Gabriele Procida (198-SG-2002) had 16 points in the loss. |
