Regular Season Round 4: Zalgiris - Maccabi T-A 74-87

Everything could happen in Kaunas at the game between two tied teams. Both twelfth ranked Israeli Maccabi T-A and 13th ranked Lithuania Zalgiris had identical 1-2 record. But Zalgiris were not able to use a home court advantage and were defeated by the opponent from Tel-Aviv 87-74 on Friday night. The game was mostly controlled by Maccabi T-A. Zalgiris was better in third quarter 25-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They made 20-of-23 free shots (87.0 percent) during the game, while Zalgiris only scored one point from the stripe. Zalgiris were plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a very good performance for American swingman Devin Smith (196-83, college: Virginia) who helped to win the game recording 17 points. The other American import guard Andrew Goudelock (190-88, college: Charleston) contributed with 18 points for the winners. Five Maccabi T-A players scored in double figures. Point guard Lukas Lekavicius (180-94) replied with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists and French guard Leo Westermann (197-92, agency: BeoBasket) added 9 points and 7 assists in the effort for Zalgiris. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Maccabi T-A (2-2) moved-up to sixth place, which they share with 5 other teams. Defending Lithuania champion Zalgiris dropped to the twelfth position with three games lost. Maccabi T-A will face FC Barcelona (#11) at home in the next round where they are favorite. Zalgiris will play against Darussafaka and hope to win that game.
