Qualifying Round Round 1: Groningen - Unics 72-84

Unics celebrated valuable victory in Groningen this evening. The Russian outfit cruised past GassTerra Flames 72-84 making big step forward to the next round. Second meeting is scheduled for Friday in Kazan. Maciej Lampe demonstrated great performance for Unics as he collected 26 points and 13 rebounds. With valuation 40 he was totally the best player of this game. Marko Popovic scored 15 points and handed out 5 assists, while Kelly McCarty added 14 pts and 5 rebounds. In GasTerra Flames, Matt Haryasz exploded with 25 points and 9 rebounds. He was their only player with double-digits as the second scorer for the hosts was Jason Dourisseau with 9 pts. Unics took control on its rival from the beginning as they made 12-19 lead. The hosts cut the margin by one for rest of the first quarter and thanks to Matt Haryasz they came to 24-25 at the beginning of Q2. Haryasz had 12 points 12 minutes into this game. Lampe answered with 5 straight points and later helped his team to take 45-48 HT lead. Third quarter was the crucial one in this meeting as Unics players intensified defense stopping the hosts to just 10 points for ten minutes. Mostly thanks to Maciej Lampe and Marko Popovic, the Russian squad drained 22 pts in this period for comfortable 55-70 lead before the last ten minutes. They had no troubles to close this game out and to transfer double-digit lead to Kazan for the Game Two.
