Regular Season Round 16: SAV Vacallo - Monthey 66-76

Very important is a home loss of third ranked SAV Vacallo (10-6) against fifth ranked Monthey (10-6) on Saturday night. Host SAV Vacallo was defeated by Monthey in Chiasso 76-66. It looked good early as SAV Vacallo took an 6-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Monthey had a 25-15 second period charge getting the lead and SAV Vacallo was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 66-76. Monthey forced 19 SAV Vacallo turnovers and outrebounded them 37-26 including 28 on the defensive glass. The winners were led by American forward Arizona Reid (196-86, college: High Point) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 19 points and 12 rebounds and the other American import guard John Sharper (186-84, college: San Diego St.) supported him with 22 points, 8 assists and 4 steals. Four Monthey players scored in double figures. Even 17 points and 8 rebounds by American guard Rickey Gibson (191-84, college: Stillman) did not help to save the game for SAV Vacallo. Croatian-Slovenian center Martin Mihajlovic (208-81) added 15 points and 5 rebounds for lost side. Monthey have an impressive five-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with defeated SAV Vacallo. Monthey will play against league's leader Lugano Tigers at home in the next round and it may be the game of the week. SAV Vacallo will play against BBC Nyon and hopes to get back on the winning track.
