SAM Massagno managed to secure a 5-point victory 95-90 on Wednesday. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 28-18. But Starwings won third quarter 30-13. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when SAM Massagno won last quarter 26-23. They made 21-of-26 free shots (80.8 percent) during the game. They shot the lights out from three sinking 12 long-distance shots on high 52.2 percentage. The game was dominated by American players. Forward A.J. Hawkins (198-85, college: Oklahoma Baptist) stepped up and scored 29 points and 6 rebounds for the winners and forward Branden Johnson (206-86, college: Montana St.) chipped in 18 points and 8 rebounds. SAM Massagno's coach Franco Facchinetti used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. Guard Tony Brown (193-79, college: Arkansas St.) responded with 27 points and 6 assists and guard Vernard Hollins (190-80, college: Wright St., agency: Warren Sports International) produced a double-double by scoring 13 points, 6 rebounds and 10 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. SAM Massagno moved-up to seventh place, which they share with defeated Starwings. SAM Massagno will meet higher ranked SAV Vacallo (#3) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Starwings will play against Zurich Wildcats (#10) and hope to secure a win.
