Regular Season Round 12: Unics - CSKA 63-54

PBL round 12 caused change at the leadership position. Third defeat of league's leader CSKA Moscow (9-3) against second ranked Unics Kazan (9-3) 63-54 was the most important game of the last round. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of CSKA Moscow. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The hosts trailed by 11 points after first quarter, but they rallied back and won the game by 9 points. Unics Kazan dominated on the defensive end, holding CSKA Moscow to just 7 points in fourth quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 40 of its points in the paint compared to CSKA Moscow's 18. It was a good game for the former international forward Kelly McCarty (201-75, college: S.Mississippi, agency: Avi Zilberman) who led his team to a victory with 15 points and 5 rebounds. Naturalized Belarusian forward Vladimir Veremeenko (208-84) contributed with 8 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Slovenian forward Matjaz Smodis (205-79) replied with 9 points and 10 rebounds and American swingman Jamont Gordon (193-87, college: Mississippi St.) added 13 points in the effort for CSKA Moscow. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Unics Kazan keeps a position of league leader, which they share with CSKA and Lokomotiv. CSKA Moscow will play next round against Dynamo Moscow trying to make it back to the top of the standings. It will be a derby game for which supporters look forward to, where their team will face at home their local rival from Moscow - Dynamo Moscow. Unics Kazan will try to continue on its current victory against tenth ranked BC Nizhny Novgorod on the road.
