Very expected game in Chiasso where 8th ranked Starwings (8-11) were crushed by fourth ranked SAV Vacallo (12-7) 89-66 on Wednesday. The game was mostly controlled by SAV Vacallo. Starwings managed to win third quarter 23-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Starwings 37-26 including a 29-18 advantage in defensive rebounds. SAV Vacallo looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by Starwings' players. It was a great evening for naturalized Serbian swingman Nikola Dacevic (205-79) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists. American forward Kevyn Popovich (196-85, college: SE Louisiana) helped adding 16 points and 6 assists. Four SAV Vacallo players scored in double figures. SAV Vacallo's coach Rodrigo Pastore felt very confident that he used 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the losing side American guard Tony Brown (193-79, college: Arkansas St.) responded with 24 points and 4 assists and the other American import guard Vernard Hollins (190-80, college: Wright St., agency: Warren Sports International) scored 13 points and 6 rebounds. SAV Vacallo maintains fourth place with 12-7 record, which they share with Monthey. Starwings at the other side dropped to the seventh position with 11 games lost. They share it with SAM Massagno. SAV Vacallo is looking forward to face higher ranked Geneve Lions (#3) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Starwings will play against the league's second-placed Fribourg (#2) and are hoping to prove to their supporters that the loss was just an accident.
