Top 16 Round 4: Valencia - Olympiacos 79-85

Excellent performance by Olympiakos in Valencia. The Reds managed to win 79-85 for 3-1 record in Group H, so they are just one step away from the Quarterfinals. On the other side, Valencia dropped to 1-3 and now faces an uphill battle to make it to the Playoffs. Vassilis Spanoulis shined for the Greeks with 18 points, while Radoslav Nesterovic added 16 points and 6 rebounds. Ioannis Bourousis (6 rebs) and Zoran Erceg secured a great help with 12 points each. For the hosts, Victor Claver (6 rebs) and Dusko Savanovic netted 16 points apiece. Rafael Martinez scored 12. Valencia grabbed 12-9 lead at the beginning, but Olympiakos replied with 5-11 for rest of the first quarter. Teams exchanged in lead in the second period, including the 8-0 run by the home squad. Visitors didn’t panic and set the score to 37-37 at the HT. Neither of two teams was able to take a serious lead after the breather. Thanks to free throws by Augustine, Valencia held 55-53 with one quarter left. They were still ahead by two with three minutes left and it was 69-67. Radoslav Nesterovic made 0-4 run on his own and Victor Claver scored on the other side. Erceg and Nesterovic made baskets for 73-77 with 90 seconds left. As the game went down to the wire, Cook and Vassilis Spanoulis traded big-time triples to set the table for a Game-of-the-Week-worthy finish at 76-80 with 31 seconds to go. Victor Claver was sent to the line, but he made just one, while on the other side Erceg had no mercy scoring both of his free throws. The victory was sealed and Olympiakos came very close to Euroleague Quarterfinals. In Round Five, Olympiakos will meet Fenerbahce Ulker in Istanbul. Valencia goes to Kaunas.
