The most surprising game was a loss of top-ranked Unics Kazan (11-4) on the court of fifth ranked Spartak St.Petersburg on Saturday night. Visitors were edged by Spartak St.Petersburg 72-70. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Unics Kazan. The hosts were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. Spartak St.Petersburg had a 14-3 advantage in offensive rebounds. 27 personal fouls committed by Unics Kazan helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Worth to mention a great performance of American guard Patrick Beverley (185-88, college: Arkansas) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 11 points and 10 rebounds and Serbian center Petar Popovic (211-79) who added 16 points and 5 rebounds during the contest. Four Spartak St.Petersburg players scored in double figures. At the losing side Croatian guard Marko Popovic (185-82, college: S.Idaho JC) responded with 19 points and naturalized Belarusian forward Vladimir Veremeenko (208-84) scored 9 points and 9 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Spartak St.Petersburg have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with CSKA. Unics Kazan at the other side still keeps top position with four games lost. Spartak St.Petersburg is looking forward to face Enisey Krasnoyarsk (#6) on the road in the next round. Unics Kazan will play against Triumph Lyubertsy (#10) in Lubertsy and is hoping to win this game.
