Regular Season Round 6: Unicaja - Panathinaikos 76-77

Date: November 24, 2011
Heartbreaking thriller was played in Malaga on Thursday night. The reigning Euroleague champion Panathinaikos grabbed 76-77 road win for 4-2 record in Group B. PAO came to Malaga after two consecutive defeats against CSKA Moscow and Bamberg. On the other side, Unicaja dropped to third place in this pool with 3-3 record. - The game was an absolute derby with the two teams fighting until the very end and with an amazing Luka Zoric from the one hand against the Dimitris Diamantidis on the other. The greens took an early lead of ten mainly due to Sato and Smith who scored 8 points each in a first period which ended with 17-27 for Panathinaikos. In the 2nd period though the home team with the help of their 10.000 fans and with Zoric, Valters and Garbajosa closed the gap by the end of the first half to the basket (43-45) by succeeding an awesome 26-18 over the European champions from Athens. The 3rd period was dramatic as the score was going basket by basket with the visiting site of Panathinaikos having a slight deficit and with both teams playing with the nerves of the basketball fans as they were quite 'down' in performance (both the teams) and with many turnovers. The 3rd period ended with 57-58 (14-13) with Zoric already scoring 15 points and being by far the top performer for the Spaniards, while from Panathinaikos 3D had also 15 points followed by Sato who had 12 and Smith (in his best game in the Euroleague) with 10 points. The 4th and final quarter was amazing as Unicaja balanced the score initially with 8.45' before the end of the game to 60-60 and the 5.48' to 64-64 and then 2.47' to 67-67 and got the lead for the first time since the beginning of the game with 68-67 with the second free throw by Rodriguez in his first points in the game. The last two minutes were 3D show time as Luka Zoric increase the deficit for his team with 1.17' to go, to 72-69 and then with just 15 seconds left Valters scored his 3rd three pointer to increase the deficit for his team to 75-71 and that was it, 3d took the ball (assist from Calathes) scored his first three pointer with 11 seconds to go, then he fouled Darden Tremmel who scored only the one of two free throws to reshape the score to 76-74 and then with less than 2 seconds to the end 3D scored another difficult three pointer with half the Spanish team overplaying him defense he was able to get the ball and throw it all the way to the Spanish net giving to his team the crucial road win with 76-77! - (by Chris Mammides) Dimitris Diamantids scored 23 points in total, while Romain Sato and Steven Smith added 13 points and 6 rebounds each. Luka Zoric collected 21 pts and 6 rebounds on the other side, Tremmell Daren (7 rebs) and Kristaps Valters scored 13 and 11 points respectively. PAO will host Zagreb in the next round, while Unicaja goes to Kaunas.
