Not a big story in a game when 10th ranked BC Nizhny Novgorod (1-6) was defeated at home by fourth ranked Spartak St.Petersburg (4-2) 77-71. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 24-16. But BC Nizhny Novgorod won second period 22-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Spartak St.Petersburg made 35-of-42 charity shots (83.3 percent) during the game, while BC Nizhny Novgorod only scored seventeen points from the stripe. Spartak St.Petersburg brought some defensive toughness making 8 blocks. BC Nizhny Novgorod was plagued by 33 personal fouls down the stretch. It was an exceptional evening for Greek center Loukas Mavrokefalidis (208-84) who led the winners and scored 22 points and 6 rebounds. Forward Valery Likhodey (205-86) accounted for 20 points and 6 rebounds (made all of his nine free throws !!!) for the winning side. American-Bosnian guard Ernest Bremer (194-80, college: St.Bonaventure, agency: Higher Vision Sports) came up with 25 points and Serbian guard Ivan Paunic (194-87, agency: Beo Basket) added 9 points and 7 rebounds respectively for BC Nizhny Novgorod in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Spartak St.Petersburg have a solid series of four victories in a row. They moved-up to third place, which they share with Spartak-Prim. BC Nizhny Novgorod lost fourth consecutive game. They stay at the bottom position with six games lost. Spartak St.Petersburg will play against Unics Kazan (#8) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. BC Nizhny Novgorod will have a break next round.
