Top 16 Round 2: Cantu - Zalgiris 79-78

Bennet Cantu grabbed 79-78 thriller win against Zalgiris in the second round of the Euroleague Top 16. Both teams failed last week, what means that Cantu has 1-1 record now and Zalgiris dropped to 0-2 in Group H. The game winner was decided at the very end. In free throw finish Nicolas Mazzarino brought 78-75 lead to Cantu with two successful shots from the line and there was 8 seconds left. Sonny Weems was fouled with 5 seconds remaining and he made the first free throw and intentionally missed the second, getting his own rebound and hitting the jumper to knot the game at 78-78. However, Kalnietis fouled Giorgi Shermadini on the in-bounds pass and the Georgian scored his first, but missed second free throw with 3.2 seconds to go. Marko Popovic grabbed the rebound and tried to score from half of the court, but missed. Gianluca Basile shined for the hosts with 15 points and 6 assists. Giorgi Shermadini scored 12 and Denis Marconato added 9 points. In Zalgiris, DeJuan Collins delivered 15 points for 15 minutes on the court. Sonny Weems had 14 points and 5 rebs, while Marko Popovic netted 12 points. Quarters: 21-17, 11-19, 17-23, 30-19. Cantu will host Maccabi next week. Zalgiris will travel to Barcelona.
