Regal Barca is 1-0 up against Unics in the Quarterfinals. The Spanish champ handed 78-66 loss to Euroleague newcomer last night at the Palau Blaugrana. Pete Mickeal shined for the hosts with 22 points and 7 rebounds. Erazem Lorbek followed him with 15 points and 5 rebs, while Juan Carlos Navarro and Boniface Ndong netted 13 and 12 points respectively. Unics got 15 points and 7 boards from center Nathan Jawai. Henry Domercant scored 12 and Vladimir Veremeenko had 11 points, plus 9 rebounds. Barca started the game in style making 7-1 and 11-3 lead. Later the home squad ended first period with 22-14. Barca was up by 12 at the halftime and Unics cut the margin to 9 points at the end of Q3. Visitors made 3-9 run at the beginning of the last period coming to 62-59, but Pete Mickeal and Boniface Ndong immediately stepped up for Barca setting the score to 69-62 few minutes later. Vladimir Veremeenko rescued Unics with a backdoor layup that Erazem Lorbek bettered matched with a long jumper for a 71-64 Barcelona lead with 2 minutes remaining. Samoylenko missed from downtown and free throws by Mickeal sealed the outcome, 73-64. Game Two is scheduled for Thursday, also at Palau Blaugrana. After that, the series goes to Kazan.
