Regular Season Round 18: Ataman - Samara-SGEU 86-103

Date: February 1, 2014
Rather expected game in Rostov where 13th ranked Ataman (3-11) was defeated by tenth ranked Samara-SGEU (5-11) 103-86 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Samara-SGEU. Ataman was better in fourth quarter 34-19. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Samara-SGEU dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to Ataman's 26. Ataman was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. The former international forward Sergey Toporov (197-81) scored 23 points and 7 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and power forward Andrey Kirdyachkin (207-90) chipped in 19 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists during the contest. The best for the losing side was swingman Aleksandr Karpukhin (191-90, agency: Stanislav Ryzhov) with 19 points and 8 rebounds and Ukrainian guard Pavel Agapov (198-79) scored 21 points. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Newly promoted Samara-SGEU maintains tenth position with 5-11 record. Ataman lost sixth consecutive game. They keep the thirteenth place with 11 games lost. Samara-SGEU will have a break next round. Ataman will play at home against the league's second-placed Novosybirsk (#2) where they are definitely not considered as a favorite in this game either.
