Regular Season Round 14: Etha - Apollon 90-71
Date: February 5, 2017
Bottom-ranked Etha managed to get a third victory, breaking the five-game losing streak on Sunday night. This time they outleveled fifth-ranked Apollon in Nicosia 90-71. It's especially surprising that the victory came too easily and 19-point difference suggests that Etha is in a good shape to leave the bottom place. The hosts trailed by 3 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 2-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 90-71. Etha dominated on the defensive end, holding Apollon to just 7 points in fourth quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Apollon's 28. American guard Baden Jaxen (190-90, college: N.Carolina) notched 29 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) to lead the effort and the other American import point guard Daiquan Walker (188-93, college: Cent.Florida) supported him with 23 points. Four Etha players scored in double figures. Even 29 points and 4 assists by the former international guard Iraklis Pittakas (192-84) did not help to save the game for Apollon. Center Papa Suleiman (207-98) added 13 points and 9 rebounds for the guests. Etha (3-11) moved-up to fifth place, which they share with defeated Apollon. Apollon lost fourth consecutive game. Etha will meet higher ranked Apoel (#3) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Apollon will play against the league's leader Keravnos and hope to secure a win.
